image012CENTRALLY located, with lots of free parking, The River Club’s driving range and Mashie Course has always been a favourite with golfers keen to sharpen their game.

Over the past few decades, the once gracious building had dipped into decay but new owners have come on board with an extensive renovation and plenty of energy.

The combination of a centrally located 9 hole, 27 par Mashie Course and a 90-bay driving range makes for the ideal space to practice and perfect the game.  With just over 5 000 000 golf balls hit every six months at the River Club – and every golfer hitting an average of 75 balls per visit, there is no doubt that the River Club is a preferred golfing location.

Close to student life and the area’s expanding demographic of young families; The River Club is a key space to connect new players to golf.  The Southern African Golf Institute runs programmes to teach golf to people of all ages. All the coaches are trained by internationally renowned coach, Grant Hepburn.

Also under new ownership, The Pro Shop is now managed by Best of Golf SA. Aside from the professional coaching on offer, the shop is stocked with kit from brands like Titleist, Greg Norman, Nicklaus, Falke and Srixon. Great kids’ golf box sets are also available.

Says River Club Golf Manager, Darryn van Zyl: “Golf membership at The River Club starts at around R 230 per month. This comes with unlimited balls and no tie-in contracts. Membership has increased by 500% in the past nine months and the club is picking up 150-200 new members per month.”

Available for separate hire, The Klipdrift VIP Lounge offers two private driving range bays in a weather-resistant hub complete with mini-bar, bottomless coffee, snacks and comfortable couches. It’s an ideal place to host a business meeting or host a golf friendly. Members receive discounts on booking the space.

The River Club has tongues wagging with its irresistible hole-in-one prize. Premium balls are sold for a shot at the prize of a brand new Audi A1.

The River Club’s nineteenth hole is the new Slug & Lettuce that has brought generous portions of homely food and a laid-back café style look to the Club. The menu encompasses breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks in between and adjacent pub is ideal for a drink with friends after a couple of swings, or to watch a big screen game.

The outdoor seating area is popular on warmer days and with weekly specials on meals, as well as events such as a comedy night on Wednesday’s, there is always a buzz going on.

Golf Club members get 10% off their bill.

Golf-loving families will make The River Club their second home. Small children will love the new River Rascals Kids Club (supervised childcare free to golf club members and restaurant patrons) and children can sign up for SNAG (Starting New at Golf) – a programme that teaches golf basics to little people.

The River Club has moved its conference offering upscale too. There are eight rooms of various sizes, all fitted with the latest AV tech and wireless, and now tastefully decorated with subtle earthy themes. It’s a great venue to team build, especially as teams can work off some adrenalin on the driving range mid-session, but it’s also makes a good venue for a special function, conference or exhibition.

Centrally located just fifteen minutes from the central city, the airport and the Southern Suburbs on all sides, The River Club is a convenient spot to stop off at lunch time, on the way home or after the school drop. Lots of secure, free parking sweetens the deal.
