“The Tourism Leadership Award will recognise an individual who is making a significant contribution to the growth and development of the tourism and hospitality sector in Southern Africa,” says Mmatšatši Marobe, CEO of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA), convenors of HICA.

She says entries for the award – nominations from colleagues or associates – are now open and will close on 25 March.

The nominee must be an individual that has dedicated his/her life to investing in people and human development, capacity building and knowledge transfer, job creation, service excellence, industry development, environmental preservation, good corporate citizenship, sustainable community development, innovation, public/private partnerships and transformation.


According to Pila Rulashe, a director at Grant Thornton Strategic Solutions, the awards were developed specifically to recognise those companies and individuals making a difference in the growth of and investment in the hospitality industry in southern Africa.


“Our business is focused on adding value and providing strategic advisory services to the tourism and hospitality sector,” he says.  “Participating in these awards each year is our way of contributing towards raising the level of professionalism, excellence and innovation of hospitality services in southern Africa.”


The awards, which are verified each year by Grant Thornton, have previously recognised industry leaders such as Adrian Gardiner of the Mantis Group, the best new hotel investment for the Protea Hotel Willow Lake in Bloemfontein, and Andrew McLachlan of the Rezidor Hotel Group as industry ‘Mover and Shaker.’
