TW0 extra time goals by Jubulani Ncubeni and Diyo Sibisi were enough to eliminate Bloemfontein Celtic in the Nedbank Cup as Maritzburg United stole a late 2-0 win, following a goalless 90 minutes, at the Harry Gwala stadium.
Celtic was the first to attack as they created a corner within the second minute, before the Phunya Sele Sele player hit an ambitious header from just outside the box.
Three minutes later there was some nervy moments for the away side’s defence, as Kurt Lentjies swung in a long free-kick. The angle confused Thabani Stemmer in goal as he had to finger tip the ball from under the bar at the near post.
On the 13 minute mark, the numbers missing for Maritzburg’s defence took its toll as their backline struggled to deal with Clifford Mulenga and Lennox Bacela’s interchange of play, but the Zambian’s eventual shot went wide at the right side of goal.
A minute for the 20 minute mark Bacela ballooned his effort over, while two minutes later the hosts took a corner but it went out for a goal-kick.
Phunya Sele Sele broke out on the counter-attack, three minutes after the half hour mark, but Bacela’s concluding shot was body checked out of play by Chansa.
Thirty-eight minutes in, Evens did well to control the ball and cross it off the byline and into the box but Tsietsi Mahoa did well to block the challenge, while four minutes later Mulenga did well to turn on the ball but his concluding shot had too much air and went above goal.
The restart brought about no changes but it nearly became a horror story for Stemmer as he spilled the ball when landing on the ground, but Thabo Nthethe luckily came to his aid by clearing the ball.
On the 51, Kgotso Moleko made a brilliant cross on the right flank but Bacela failed to get an execution onto it, while five minutes Lentjies was found unmarked in the box but his effort skipped across the face of goal.
Three minutes after the hour mark, the best chance of the game fell to Celtic but Bacela looked hesitant to fully throw himself at the ball as the cross went out at the near post, while Jubalini Ncubeni replaced Wayne Matle a minute later.
Danny Venter was replaced by Phenyo Mongala for Celtic on the 70th minute, while Prince Olomu was take off for the hosts and replaced by Kulegani Madondo three minutes later.
Chansa spilled an effort which fell to Nthethe but the ‘keeper managed to make another save, 76 minutes in.
Seven minutes from the 90 Mulenga missed a chance of note as he made a run into the box but his left-footed shot skipped over the onrushing Chansa and out wide. Three minutes later Lentjies sent in a looping ball over the backline but the Celtic defence managed to clear it.
A minute into stoppage time Mathoa was booked for a foul on the edge of the D. The resulting free-kick from Lentjies was poorly taken and was skied behind goal, forcing play to go into 30 minutes extra time.
In the eight minute of the first half of extra time Bacela was taken off for Ezenwa Otorogu, in hope of adding more firepower upfront, while two minutes later Mulenga continued with his poor shooting as he ballooned the ball over the goal from close range.
But just seconds later Maritzburg United took the lead through Ncubeni as he powered through the ball in the box to go back into the net.
Twenty-one minutes into the 30 minutes of extra time, Madondo struck an ambitious volley from far out but it went out of play: not troubling the goalkeeper.
On the other end, in the 114 minute, Chansa palmed the ball over the bar just minutes before Michael Morton fired wide of Stemmer’s goal.
Celtic hearts sunk further as Diyo Sibisi made the lead 2-0 as he slotted the ball into the back of the net from the 8-yard area to eliminate Celtic once more.
