Victory eludes NFD rookies

THERE was no dream start for either of the NFD new-comers in Sunday’s National First Division action.

Baroka FC were able to come away something for their efforts, thanks to their 0-0 home draw with Sivutsa Stars in Polokwane.

It was however the side from Mpumalanga who felt they had the better of the exchanges, with former Golden Arrows defender Curtis dos Santos coming close to grabbing an 87th minute winner in one of several missed opportunities for Stars.

While Baroka at least had a point to show for their efforts, fellow promoted side Maluti FET College had no such reward, suffering a 2-1 defeat to African Warriors in a Free State derby game. Kamohelo Mabuya it was who did the damage for Warriors as he netted a brace on the day.

Witbank Spurs got their season off to the perfect start, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Thanda Royal Zulu. Peter Mubayiwa proved to be the difference, popping up with the winner 20 minutes from time.

This after Thanda’s Christoph Komane had cancelled out Randy Ngobe’s opening strike, the score 1-1 at half time.


After the weekend’s six games (there were no matches in the Cape due to the poor weather), its Chippa United who lead the standings, thanks to their 4-2 win away to Blackburn Rovers on
