VOLKSWAGEN South Africa is proud to announce the acquisition of naming rights to Dobsonville Stadium, the future home of our team, Moroka Swallows. Dobsonville Stadium will be renamed the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium from the start of the 2011/2012 PSL season.
“Volkswagen South Africa has been proud to be associated with Moroka Swallows for the last six seasons. As such we have extended our sponsorship of the club for further two seasons,” said Mike Glendinning, Director: Sales and Marketing, Volkswagen Group South Africa.
“Volkswagen is very excited to align itself with Moroka Swallows’ move back to Dobsonville and the ownership of the naming rights of the stadium will give us the opportunity to leverage our sponsorship.”
Moroka Swallows’ move back to Dobsonville Stadium is part of the clubs long term strategy to get closer to its Soweto roots and focus on the development of young talented players. The aim is to re-establish the club as a one of the powerhouse of Soweto football as well as open an academy in Soweto which will develop the best South African football talent.
The renaming of the stadium is part of a rebranding strategy which will establish Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium as the Home of Volkswagen Football in Africa. Over the coming seasons not only will Moroka Swallows use the stadium as their home ground, but also the South African regional finals of Volkswagen’s global youth tournament, the Junior Masters will be held at the stadium.
The full rebranding plan of the stadium will be unveiled to the media and the pubic during the early part of the 2011/2012 PSL season, with a specific focus on media comfort, recording the history of the club and involving the local community in branding this icon of Soweto football.

In recognition of its strength of experience and expertise, the City of Johannesburg appointed Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), on a long term legacy base ahead of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, as the official management company for the iconic Soccer City Complex, FNB Stadium, as well as Orlando, Rand and Dobsonville Stadiums. SMSA continues to demonstrate its commitment to managing these venues in a competent and dynamic manner, and Volkswagen South Africa together with Moroka Swallows would like to thank both SMSA and MegaPro Marketing for their professionalism in bringing about the realisation of the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium.
The refurbishment of Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium started in 2006 and completed in 2009 just in time before the start of the FIFA World Cup 2010, during which the Brazilian National Football Team trained at the venue.
Designed by Tshepega Engineering, the same architectural company that designed Rand Stadium, Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium has a contemporary design with a roof covering spectators on the grandstand.
Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium does not only host football games but it also acts as an athletics venue which is fitted with a high quality synthetic track.
The grandstand boasts new suites, media facilities, change rooms and a gym. The precinct around the stadium has also been spruced up. Construction of pedestrian walkways on the east, north and west of the stadium is complete and turnstiles have been added on the northern and eastern sides.
