At Senwes Stadium, Potchefstroom
WESTERN Province capped their glorious moment in the 2012 edition of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week, beating Gauteng by 4 wicked in an electrified final match.
Western Province showed their determination to win this match as early as the first session of this match which was played at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom’s University of North West when they bowled out few players in the earlier minutes, however Gauteng’s Wesley Coulentianos proved to be a difficult opponents, scoring 73 runs from 83 balls on the process before he was bowled out in the late stage of the match. Wesley who entered the field after nursing a right hand injury which he sustained during yesterday’s match was bowled out by Dawood Christian, however his team-mate, Karabo Mogotsi brought little hope and managed 33 runs as Gauteng went on to finished the first session with 218/9.
As for Western Province who last year reached the final match of this under-19 cricket tournament but only to be beaten by Boland, theirs was purely based on a team effort as they started the second session on a high note, scoring a number of runs while at the same time avoiding to be bowled out.
Credit must go to Keagan Smith who led the Western Province with 54 runs, followed by David Bedingham (45) followed by Brander and Smith with 39 and 32 runs respectively to give their side a deserving 222/6 victory.
