BAROKA, TUKS AND JDR IN A TUSSLE FOR PLAY-OFFS QUALIFICATION

By NAKAMPE LEKWADU

FOOTBALL fanatics can brace themselves for an action galore tomorrow (May 20) across the country as clubs in the Motsepe Foundation Championship wrap their 2023/24 season in what is dubbed as the Super Sunday.

While Magesi FC who earned an automatic promotion after winning the league two weeks ago with two matches to space would argue that they had an easy season, the same can’t be said by clubs such as Baroka FC, JDR FC and Pretoria University who are forced to wait until the last day before knowing whether they will be participating in the promotional play-offs. For the record, two clubs which finish on the second and third position will be joined by the club that finishes on the 15th position in the DSTV Premiership in a mini league play-offs of which the club with more points earning their passage to the top flight league.

Pretoria University are on the second position with 48 points take on third place Baroka FC (46 points) in their last match and both the two are seriously desperate for a win in order to qualify for the play-offs. Unless if another play-offs contender, JDR FC (4th place with 46 points) could lose or play to a draw against Maritzburg United in another crucial match, then a draw between Baroka and Tuks will easy earned their passage through.

Focusing on relegation threatened clubs, no one is safe as even a club on the 10th position could find themselves relegated come tomorrow 5pm as only three points separating them and the one on the 14th position. Pretoria Callies are on the 10th position with 34 points, followed by Venda Academy and Black Leopards on the 11th and 12th position with the same number of points. Marumo Gallants are on the 13th position with 33 points while Milford FC and NB La Masia are on the 14th and 15th positions with 31 points with Platinum City having been relegated to the ABC Motsepe League.

Tomorrow’s last fixtures are as follows: Black Leopards v NB La Masia, JRD v Maritzburg United, Magesi FC v Venda Academy, Marumo Gallants v Orbit College, Milford FC v Pretoria Callies, Platinum City v Hungry Lions, Pretoria University v Baroka and Upington City v Casric Stars
