TITO MBOWENI IS NO MORE

THE family of Tito Mboweni has confirmed that the former Reserve Bank governor has died.

In a released statement, the family said: “It is with deep sadness that the Mboweni family announces the passing of former Reserve Bank governor and minister of finance Tito Titus Mboweni. The family is devastated by governor Mboweni’s passing after a short illness. He passed away in hospital in Johannesburg on Saturday night surrounded by his loved ones,” the statement read.

Mboweni who died at the age of 65 was the first minister of Labour after the first democratic elections in 1994-1998. Prior to his appointment he was deputy Head of the Department of Economic Policy in the African National Congress (ANC). He also represented the ANC on several domestic and international platforms.

He was the eighth Governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) from 1999 to 2009. He joined the SARB in July 1998 as Advisor to the Governor.
