FLODLIGHTS FAILURE SPOIL PRO FOOTBALL MATCH’S HISTORIC MOMENT AT SESHEGO STADIUM

By NAKAMPE LEKWADU

THE Municipality of Polokwane has apologised to the Premier Soccer League, league sponsors (Betway) and the fans for the power outrage at the newly revamped Seshego Stadium that saw the league match between Magesi FC and Chippa United abandoned.

The match was supposed to be a historical moment and of course a well-deserved celebration for municipality for successfully providing a new professional football venue to add to the already overused two stadiums in the New and Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, more so because the Seshego venue has not hosted any professional football matches over the past two decades.

In a statement, Polokwane Municipality said: “Polokwane Municipality deeply regrets the unforeseen technical issue with the floodlights at the Seshego Stadium last night. The municipality recognises the inconvenience this may cause to players, officials and passionate football supporters. The municipality apologises to the Premier Soccer League, Magesi FC, Chippa United and all football fans who were affected by this incident and fully acknowledges the importance of delivering a seamless match-day experience.”

The municipality said a thorough investigations were currently underway to determine the root cause of the malfunction and to implements the necessity measures to prevent such occurrence in the future.

The power and lights twice switched off, the first time after just two minutes. However, after a brief spelling of interruption, the game continued with Magesi scoring via Mcedi Vandala.

Chippa, though, immediately pounced back and equalised after four minutes. But the lights again went off after 21 minutes.
