Police investigate attempted murder case involving acid attack in Zebediela

The South African Police Service in Limpopo is investigating a troubling case of attempted murder that transpired in Mogoto village under the Magatle police precinct, following an incident that was initially classified as assault resulting in grievous bodily harm.

The case originates from an event that took place in October 2024 but was formally reported to law enforcement in January 2025. A 27-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted and doused with acid by a 25-year-old female suspect, Yvonne Maja, reportedly stemming from a romantic dispute. The assault occurred at the residence of the victim’s boyfriend in Mogoto village, situated within the Moletlane policing precinct, just outside Zebediela.

Following extensive police investigations, the suspect was apprehended on 14 February 2025 and subsequently appeared before the Zebediela Periodical Court on 15 February 2025. She was granted bail in the amount of R3,000, and the case was transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court for further proceedings.

The accused made her inaugural appearance at the Mokopane Regional Court on 01 July 2025. The matter has been postponed for additional court processes and is scheduled to resume on 21 July 2025.

The investigation remains ongoing.
