The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Wednesday marched to Polokwane Municipality to deliver a memorandum to municipal mayor John Mpe to call for his resignation.
The march which was led by Lawrence Mapoulo, the provincial leader of the party, saw thousands of disgruntled local residents gather in protest against alleged corruption and nepotism happening within the municipality.
In a statement released by the party, this call of action was in response to corruption allegations that the municipality finds itself in.
“The protest march against corruption is not point scoring, rather it is a necessary action to expose corruption which is a cancer to society,” the statement said.
This remarks follows after the Polokwane Municipality was caught wanting after social media posts showed transactions where the boyfriend of the municipal manager Thuso Nemugumoni was alleged to have been awarded a tender contract worth R56 Million. The boyfriend whom is believed to be a Zimbabwean national.
Mapoulo said they are also aggrieved by the lack of service delivery of the municipality. “The municipality has hiked electricity rates, the roads are in a very terrible condition, and sewage systems are not maintained,” he said.
