Former President Thabo Mbeki Defends “Kill the Boer Kill the Farmer” Chant

Former President Thabo Mbeki has again stated that the signing of the “Kill the Boer Kill the Farmer” song is not to incite violence against the Afrikaner community.

Mbeki was speaking to media houses in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Mbeki reminded the public that he once explained the contextual meaning of African struggle chants during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) hearings.

The re-emergence of the debate about the singing of the song follows after US President Donald Trump played a clip at the Oval office of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema singing the song during the party’s 10th anniversary at the FNB stadium in 2023.

“It was a chant during the days of the struggle. And chants of that kind in an African tradition, you don’t take literally. At the TRC, to illustrate the point, i sang the song. The ANC policy was forever against the killing of civilians.”, he said.
