President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe acting president of the Republic of South Africa.

This designation flows from working visit to Washington DC, where President Ramaphosa and his deputy, Paul Mashatile will hold bilateral engagements with US President Donald Trump.

Spokesperson to the Presidency, Vincent Magwenya, stated in a press release earlier this morning that the designation was enacted in accordance with the constitution of the country.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has, in terms of Section 90 (1) (b) of the constitution, designated Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe as the acting President of the Republic of South Africa from 18 to 22 May 2025”, he said.
